Are "magic mushrooms" now illegal in the Netherlands?

No way! That's not surprising though, they've been cracking down on everything lately. At least that's what the media says.

Has anybody been there lately for a report from the ground?

I was there in September and they were aware that mushroom sales were probably going to be banned shortly. There's still enough coffeeshops to keep most people happy, but certainly they are closing down at a faster rate - partly due to the smoking ban (yup, you can now smoke weed in a coffee shop while your mate get's booked for lighting a cigarette!).

Honestly though, while I recognise the need to provide safe and reliable sources of drugs I kinda hope it helps stem the flood of poorly controlled, messy drug tourists that visit Amsterdam. I'd hate to live there and wake up to people's vomit all over the streets every day, which is what it sounds like the put up with every summer. Talk about conducting yourself well when visiting a foreign country no.gif

Smoking ban: No way! I hadn't heard of that, that's bizarre for SURE.

Thanks Cheli for the report.

Yeah, unlike North Americans, Europeans tend to mix their weed with tobacco so they're pretty annoyed about the ban actually! Me, I'm just glad I don't have to wash my hair before going to bed after going out at night anymore!
