Does anyone know what the repercussions are for staying in the US longer than the length of the visa. If anyone has any information on this it would be a great help.

Thanks a lot

Deportation and a fine probably, I should think.

Yeah. Although it can vary based on how much longer you stayed. The longer you stay, the bigger the penalty.

Plus the fact that you won't be able to return to the USA for many, many years to come. You will be listed in immigration and your visa or visa waiver will be blocked.

I would think it might be just a tad more difficult to get another US visa in the near future as well. no.gif

Deportation and the fact you won't be allowed back for a long time, if at all.

Don't do it.

Don't even try it, I got a bit of an earful from them just for asking for some Tape to bind some straps and got told to speak a real language.

IT was a simple request as I had some straps on my backpack loose and needed them secure for the Airlines to take them on the flight home.

I saw a fellow traveller using some cellotape from an American Officer and I politety asked if I could borrow it for the same purpose, when the American Officer turned to me and said "Can You Speak a Real Language".

I know my accent is a bit strong, but I wasn't rude or demanding.

Cellotape? Well I never! Here is the USA it's called Scotch Tape. I would imagine the immigration officer only speaks American English.

I'm A Kiwi but it was a pretty straight forward request, I pointed and asked if I could borrow it as well.

From the U.S. State department website...

"Staying Beyond Your Authorized Stay in the U.S. and Being Out of Status

* You should carefully consider the dates of your authorized stay and make sure you are following the procedures under U.S. immigration laws. It is important that you depart the U.S. on or before the last day you are authorized to be in the U.S. on any given trip, based on the specified end date on your Arrival-Departure Record, Form I-94. Failure to depart the U.S. will cause you to be out-of-status.
* Staying beyond the period of time authorized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and being out-of-status in the United States is a violation of U.S. immigration laws, and may cause you to be ineligible for a visa in the future for return travel to the U.S. Select Classes of Aliens Ineligible to Receive Visas to learn more.
* Staying unlawfully in the United States beyond the date Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have authorized--even by one day--results in your visa being automatically voided, in accordance with INA 222(g). Under this provision of immigration law, if you overstay on your nonimmigrant authorized stay in the U.S., your visa will be automatically voided. In this situation, you are required to reapply for a new nonimmigrant visa, generally in your country of nationality. "

That doesn't mention any fines...but there might be something else on the website that would mention those.

If you want to extend your stay

Quote from my friend Chuck, who spent 5 months riding his bicycle all the way around the USA - "Nobody says you have to order an entree in the restaurant of life, you'll only be here once! Order the sampler, try as many as you can before you're full; odds are one (of) the items on this menu does more for you than you ever thought. And if I'm wrong, tell the waiter that his menu sucks, throw the cook aside and invent your own masterpiece. Just pour 'em all in, all your favorite ingredients. With enough imagination, any combination will work -- there are no recipes for the paths still awaiting discovery."

Thanks for the research Mr. Truck! It makes sense that they wouldn't let you back in again. I'm assuming the punishments get worse with time, I don't know...

Why would you even consider being banned from a country, thats just such a plan old stupid move.

Try it and just see how far you get, because you would have to be thick to even consider it.
