Hola!

I´m Petra Post, Dutch, and I live in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. I work at CELAS Maya, one of the bigger and best organised language schools of Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. CELAS Maya stands for “Centro de Estudios Linguisticos, Antropologicos y Sociales Maya” (Centre for Linguistic, Anthropologic and Social Studies, with a Mayan accent).
We offer classes in Spanish and Quiché, the local Mayan languages that is spoken a lot in the Quetzaltenango (rural) area. The philosophy of our school is connecting language studies with the cultural context of Guatemala, and the personal interests and desires of the students serve as manual for the structure of the classes. We strive to connecting each student with a teacher that shares the same academic and personal interests.

Our methodology exists of 1-on-1 instruction and the integration in local culture by living in a host family (if desired). Our students participate actively in the learning process, and establish an important base in the Spanish language by theory, analysis, exercises and application.

The classes take place around our garden, a patio with plants and sun. The school is a colonial building, where the students can meet each other, study for classes or participate with the many activities. Classes are given from 8-1 in the morning, and from 2-7 in the afternoon.

Besides giving language instruction, we are also known for our wide variety in activities. We organise excursions frequently, like volcano hikes, mountainbike tours, cultural trips to indigenous villages and the hot springs in the mountains. For more information, please visit the site of our tour operator:
www.icarotours.com

Facilities we offer at the school are free coffee/tea/water during classes, free use of Internet in our own internetcafe, organised excursions by our tour operator Icaro Tours, after class activities with the students, and also for volunteer work we have a wide variety in projects where students can spend their time after classes in a useful way.

We would like to welcome you at our school, and for further questions or information about travelling in/to Guatemala, we are also there to help you! For direct contact with me, the international student coordinator, send me a message on the forum, or email me at celasmaya@gmail.com
