Yep and its made me rethink my plan to include Thailand, and drive around for 3 or so weeks.

There is some information on the AA website about this, just in case you want to have a look while you're out that way

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overs...by-country.html

It lists each country with the driving requirements - for Vietnam it says:

G – National licence or IDP should be presented to the police who will issue a visitors licence.

Oddness...I was only going by those two shows, especially "By Any Means" where everyone said they just couldn't drive without passing the local test first - which is what Top Gear did - they had to take the local motorcycle test (and not just for our amusement either). Problem is they didn't elaborate on it anymore than "We have to pass the local test first" so maybe it was not as truthful as they made out - it is entertainment rather than a documentary.

Cheers for the link - it's pretty handy, as I cant find my IDP at the moment, which has the same information (Not that I've ever been asked for it when renting a car or when I got pulled over). Another link to add to the list to help plan trips is always useful!

Are you planning on taking a car across borders? I'm wondering if hire companies let you do that?

I've been looking into that - it seems hugely complicated to take a hire car across borders there and most hire companies don't seem to allow it anyway. I love the idea of driving round in a big circle through a number of the countries, but I think its highly unlikely that will be an option.

I think we are going to hire in the North of Thailand and drive around there.

I've been looking around on the internet, it looks beautiful - lots of mountains and forested areas?

I am right now traveling in ZheJiang Province in China and I have only planned the first day, that's what caused my walking for a very long way to find a hotel that i can afford......
but i will still choose to wing it next time...
