QUOTE(huckabmm @ Dec 22 2008, 06:16 PM) QUOTE(kitkatgo @ Dec 22 2008, 03:34 PM) I just finished French 1 and will be taking French 2 on my quest to learn French (I had been teaching myself prior to that).
I've been using Rosetta Stone to teach myself French and Spanish with mixed results...mostly I find its hard to keep myself motivated. Did you find that teaching yourself was too hard as well? Is the class worth it? (Sorry if this is off topic...) Well, since learning French is part of my Travel resolutions...it seems on topic to me. I do like Rosetta Stone. However, I did find that taking a class was so, so helpful, and I'm really glad I did it. You can learn a lot on your own, and from Rosetta Stone. But for me, I needed the class to pull it all together and to understand the quirky grammar, and for the conjugation of verbs. I think part of it just depends on your learning style what's best for you. For me, I need the classes too. I will still use Rosetta Stone to further my learning though. Also, I understand the motivation part. I have a deep desire to learn the language, but you have to have a lot of self-discipline to make yourself do Rosetta Stone regularly. Sometimes I'd go quite awhile without doing it all! You don't have that luxury with a class... Good luck with your learning!

QUOTE(starlagurl @ Jan 5 2009, 02:04 PM) QUOTE(darrenstravels @ Dec 31 2008, 07:53 AM) She dumped my arse at the top of a mountain in France though, so it didn't work out.
It's off topic but, what??? What happened? Went Snowboarding in the French Alps, and she chose that as the perfect time to end our 5 year relationship. Thing is, we had to get home still. Together. It was really awkward. Really, really, awkward. That's why my travel blog entries prior to 2007 mention "we" but have no mention of anyone else's name

I could never understand ending a relationship while you're stuck together. Like, the last thing you'd want to do is continue enjoying your trip together. Did you guys split ways after that?

For some people travel is a way of life and it does not necessarily include 5 star hotels and vacations on the far away beaches. There are so many other ways to experience different cultures and enrich ones life. The best one is to try and observe people, interact, stay in hostels or find contacts and stay at people's homes if possible, go to the national cuisine restaurants and visit markets, stadiums, theaters etc, try and really feel the pulse of the country you are visiting. Some places can really surprise you, you can find the most friendly people in the countries you heard nothing but bad things about. So brake that chain of prejudice, and go see the places from the bottom of your list, you will be amazed by all you've been missing. There is a book that talks allot about these kind of things, it is a travel journal of an Iranian American entrepreneur traveling in Balkans, called The Age of Nepotism. I warmly recommend it, and also the site www.theageofnepotism.com REALLY GOOD STORY!!!

I've got a fairly intensive travel schedule for 2009 Guangzhou, China (Started off the New Year there) Hong Kong, China (one day there on way back home) Macau, China (partial day there in the casino) Glens Falls, NY (home for 2 days btwn trips) Tres Lagoas, Brazil (currently here for work) Iguazu Falls (Argentina side) (long weekend away from work) La Paz, Bolivia (I want to bike down the North Yungas Road...aka Road of Death) Porto Seguro, Brazil (possible work trip) Syktyvkar, Russia (possible work trip, depending on work visa issuance) Denver, CO (to visit friends) Probably will be several other last minute trips for work or to visit friends. Also, Jacqui and I are in the midst of planning a European Rail-Riding Adventure for this summer (in order): Turkey (European side) Turkey (Asian side) Greece Bulgaria Macedonia Albania Kosovo (part of Serbia Montenegro Srpska (part of Bosnia & Herzegovina) Bosnia & Herzegovina Serbia Romania Hungary Slovakia Poland Czech Republic Austria Slovenia Croatia Italy San Marino Vatican City Malta Sicily (Italian Island) Lampedusa (Italian Island) Sardinia (Italian Island) Corsica (French Island) France Monaco Switzerland Lichtenstein Germany I think that might be enough new countries for one year... Although I also like the idea of doing a cruise to Bermuda and the Caribbean in fall if the price is right.

Currently traveling the world on the company's dime...it's the cheapest way to go!!! Quote from my friend Chuck, who spent 5 months riding his bicycle all the way around the USA - "Nobody says you have to order an entree in the restaurant of life, you'll only be here once! Order the sampler, try as many as you can before you're full; odds are one (of) the items on this menu does more for you than you ever thought. And if I'm wrong, tell the waiter that his menu sucks, throw the cook aside and invent your own masterpiece. Just pour 'em all in, all your favorite ingredients. With enough imagination, any combination will work -- there are no recipes for the paths still awaiting discovery."
