I stayed on Koh Chang a few times for a few months total. I'd agree with Neil. I'd have to say that mostly I relaxed and had food and drinks with friends but I wouldn't consider it a real party island. ofcourse you can always meet people but it's much more laid back then some of the other islands mentioned, at least when I was there. I think it is much more developed now though then when i was there.....
Yeah, the bonus (for some) is it's close to Bangkok but really, you can get to alot of other great islands too in a day or so. Considering it only took us a ten hour train ride and a few hours on the bus to get almost to the southern tip of the country and around there there are plenty of islands to choose from.
Ko Phangan is the party spot, to me, annoyingly so. Phi Pi isn't that far behind. But, if it's party action you're looking for with some shopping and beaches thrown in, those are good choices for you.
