On another board there was a discussion of the closing of bars for a couple of days for the observance the funeral of the Thai Princess. Some of the comments were quite telling.

The OP suggested that, had they known about the closure, they would have changed their "family" holiday dates. Some posters thought that such closures would be the death of some bars. Others suggested that it could be disasterous to Thai tourism.

I'm curious; how many would change their plans based on the availability of alcohol?

It doesn't really matter much to me. I can live without alcohol for a short while lol. That country is really putting itself into it's own hole.

When I got to Kandy (sri lanka), I had just come off of over 5 months in India and a lot of bad beer (there is no good beer in India!). All I wanted after a long day of traveling was a famous Lion beer, supposed to be everything Indian beer is not.
Unfortunately it was the celebration of Buddha's tooth, and the town is dry during that time. A slight disappointment, but I still stayed to see the elephant processions before high-tailing it to somewhere else that had beer. .

Wouldn't change my plans in the slightest. I can happily live with or without alcohol.

If you can't last a few days without a drink, shoot yourself.

Sometimes you do crave a good cold beer though. . .

The celebration of the Buddha's tooth??? I've never heard of that one...

When I was in Thailand there was no alcohol on the day of the election either. It wasn't a big deal for me, but I kind of felt bad because I was having a blogger meetup and I couldn't buy anyone drinks, just dinner...

That's a bit drastic.

Nope, availability of alcohol wouldn't sway my decision at all.

I meant it in jest, but I do stand by it too - I don't really understand people who seem to have to have a drink. If it tastes good, fine (A lovely cold Strongbow does do wonders, true) but maybe it's just me and the people I know, as it seems they drink because its what others do, not because they like the taste etc.

I'm not saying go tee total, but for a few days, unless you do have a problem, I can't see how it can have any real impact. Just being on a trip should make you happy!

Saying all that, its normally cheaper to get alcohol here in a pub than a pint / large soft drink.

I don't need to travel to drink. drinks_wine.gif I"ve got all the alcohol I want right here. I travel to experience something different. So if I go without alcohol for a week or two, that's very different. frantics.gif

I prefer no availability above availability since I don't drink and I don't like drunk people. They stink, don't know what they're doing and usually aren't doing anything nice.

Hmmm... do you think that everyone should not be allowed to drink though? Not all people who drink are drunk...
