If you're getting sick every time you travel... after a while it gets to you and you need to prevent it somehow...

Research has found that the recirculated air, on the planes, carry a lot of bacteria, chemicals, & particles that can make people ill. Talk to your doctor & ask what you can do about this. I'm thinking of some kind of mask that would filter out all these things as you breathe.

Why would you want to do something about this? Why filter it out? It's good for you. A little exposure is good, build up your immunity and all that..

I am not over my cold from Morocco 10 days ago and flying again on Friday, I will see how I go this time.....it does get frustrating because then I spent the time travelling with sore throat, coughing, blocked nose and no sleep...that is no fun! I have popped vitamins, garlic, cough medicine....even tried consuming huge amounts of alcohol to kill the bug....but nothing! (it has to be the aircon on the plane!)

Recently in Mexico, we caught an overnight bus from Oaxaca to San Cristobal. It wasn't long until we started heading through the mountainous, windy roads at break-neck speed. I was firstly concerned that we were going to die. The driver was a maniac...

It wasn't long until my concern was that I wouldn't - The motion sickness had set in... but badly!!

Just wanted to mention altitude sickness as it is the worst traveling illness I ever encountered. It can be very serious so anyone going into places such as the Andes or Himalayas should be careful. Apparently, it is also a very individual illness as it depends on how your metabolism and body reacts to high altitude conditions. Old people may be fine whereas an Olympic athlete might have great difficulties.

Soroche (the Peruvian term) ended up providing me with a luxurious week stay at a hospital in Lima after I went into a coma for a few days. Of course because of that, it really wasn't that bad for me at all as I have not a lot of memories of what happened after "going to bed." sleeping_03anim.gif

Totally totally agree with that. I suffered a ridiculous degree of altitude sickness and can only be thankful I'm here today writing this. How I made it out alive is beyond words. All I can say is I was very very lucky. Yeah you're right, there's travel sickness and then there's travel sickness..

OMG, I had no idea you could go into a coma, that's terrible.

What happened to you, Scott?

My first encounter with altitude sickness was when we went to Pike's Peak, Colorado with an elevation of 14,110ft. I had this weired feeling and I was so scared that I told DH we had to go back down "now".

We were advise to drink plenty of water and to ascend slowly which we did.

When we went to Jungfraujoch in Switzerland with 11,333 ft. elevation, DS got sick. We let him stayed inside and drink lots of water and he recovered.

You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you. What I can say is that it warrants a whole separate travelogue, one which is still in progress wink.gif
