Rotorua -
This is the most important place to see and explore in the North Island. I tell every one that if they only have a day in the North Island this is where you spend it!
Here are the activities/places I think are important:
1. The Maori Villages/hangi(traditional Maori earth oven for cooking) - Either or both since you have two nights and spend the time going through their village one or the other.
Whakarewarewa Thermal Village and/or Tamaki Maori Village (new kid on the block with lots of money to create).
2. Paradise Valley Springs
3. Hells Gate - take a mud bath
4. Agradome Sheep Show/Farm Tour - learn about the NZ sheep actually very fascinating for an old Ohio boy
'5. Blue Baths - since the 30's
6. Tribal Lights - a very interesting Maori performance
south of Rotorua and north of Taupo are two extremely important geo-thermal places to visit if going this route:
1. Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park (one of two geo-thermal caves in the world - did "Walking with Dinosaurs" there
2. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland 27kms south of Rotorua - geyser erupts 10:15am
