What is a Local Expert?

Click here for a current list of all of TravelPod's Local Experts.

Local Experts are dedicated people who are passionate about their hometowns. They can be very helpful if you are looking for insider information on your next travel destination.

They are here to answer all your questions about many places all over the world. They are your "ear to the ground" in foreign places.

The most important aspect of being a Local Expert is posting a guide about one specific part of the world, also known as a "starter kit". This is a topic that is easily located, pinned to the top of the forum that a Local Expert represents.

If you are traveling to, say, Ontario, you should be able to easily find the Ontario topic in the Canada forum, read the guide to the province, and then reply to that topic for further discussion or a more detailed explanation about Ontario.

Local Experts will usually respond to your question promptly. If they don't, you can contact them directly.

There is a Google map, pointing to all of our current Local Experts

What are the qualifications to become a Local Expert?

None, no one has to pass a "test" to become a Local Expert. All they have to do is write an acceptable starter kit and participate in the forums on a weekly basis (so that I know they are still alive and still interested in helping out).

Here are some examples of excellent "starter kits"
http://www.travelpod.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7949

http://www.travelpod.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5140

Do they represent TravelPod?

No, they are just people who are passionate about their home town, country or region.

Duties and responsibilities

Local Experts are required to keep tabs on their area of expertise. This means tracking all messages in the forum about the region they represent.

When a new expert is added, they automatically become the moderator of the forum they represent.

Because of this, they are expected to contribute to the general community by posting a new topic or replying to another person at least once a week.

Well, have you read some other ones? I like to see general information and personal recommendations. What are your favourite things to do? Where are your favourite places to go?

Hi Mike, mochilerosdsas and Chiranjit

If you are serious about becoming Local Experts, the first thing you need to do is write up a "starter kit" about your home town or country and post it in the forum related to your home region.

Here are some examples of excellent starter kits

That's great news!

Please post a "starter kit" in the India forum and I can upgrade your status.

Here are some examples of starter kits from India that I have received in the past:
