I have a question for any of you out there who might know the answer. I dream of visiting Japan, but if I did, it would be on an incredibly tight budget. Is it possible to camp out in Japan? I would probably only be able to visit on destination and it would probably be Kyoto. Would I be able to find a place to camp out, or do you think I could sleep in a forest or bamboo grove somewhere outside the city? I have no problem whatsoever sleeping outside. I've done it many times.

really think that would be hard in Japan. There is a homeless population who sleep in parks, like Ueno in Tokyo and seem ok. there are books I've read by a girl cyclist who pitched a small tent most nights mainly in the country, but most hostels are about $50 night though you can eat fairly cheaply from convenience stores and samples from food depts. in big stores.

Thank you. I've heard that you can find cheap food. Unfortunently $50.00 is out of my price range. I'll probably find some place in the country to sleep.

Hey Scott! Have you looked into CouchSurfing in Japan? That would be a real cheap way to go and a great way to meet locals. From what I can tell there are lots of Japanese CS'ers with couches available.
