We will be in Santorini as a port stop in Sept. on Wednesday 9/15/2010 from noon till midnight.

Does anyone have any tips on what to do, where to eat, where to watch the sunset, if we should take the cruise excursion or just rent some quads?

Any info is appreciated!

Hi,

The big island's most famous spot to watch the sunset is Oίa. If you get there quite early you can sit on the ruins and get a stunning view. I was never that early so instead I found a rooftop terrace (there are quite a few in Oίa) and parked myself there for a few hours. It's also a really nice city to walk around and shop and eat. In Fira you will also find lots of great restaurants. Go to the cliffside to find a good view with your meal. I can't remember names off the top of my head but if you read my Santorini blog, I make some restaurant recommendations in there. You can rent quads but it is a lot faster and quite easy to take the bus from Fira to Oίa. The closer to sunset, the more crowded the bus. Three hours or earlier will have plenty of space though.

Santorini is absolutely beautiful for watching sunsets, and I agree that you'll see some amazing ones in Oia. My advice would be to take a sunset cruise as it's a lovely experience. Where will you be going on the rest of your trip?

Hi Claire, Thanks for the info! We will be in Athens overnight, then on a star clipper cruise, then in Athens for 2 more days after the cruise.

Don't do that! Nothing offends the locals more than strangers perching on their rooftops!

You can dine and watch the sunset at the same time in Oia at the Pelekanos Restaurant and the Kastro Restaurant and still have plenty of time to get back to your ship afterwards.
