Hi.

A while ago (around 7 years ago) while I was travelling through Vietnam, I met some wonderful people. Two sisters, Dao and Phung. They both worked as receptionists in a guest house I was staying in.

They helped me learn some Vietnamese language and a bit about their life and culture. I helped them learn English in exchange.

As I observed them more I noticed how hard they worked, how polite they were to everyone, how caring they were to each other and most people they came across. They were good people. They were also quite poor. They owned 3 dresses, 1 bicycle and 1 bed between the 2 of them and they swapped those items as one worked one shift at the hotel and one worked the other.

Their dad was sick at the time, and they were earning money to put their younger brother through school. From memory, the family of 5 earned about $500 a year.

Anyway, to cut a long story down - I became good friends with them and keep in contact and visited and have been adopted as their older brother.

I myself live in Northern Thailand where I work for a Thai NGO that helps ethnic minorities and I earn about $250 a month from that. I have a 7 month baby. I don't have a lot of money, but I have a good life.

Dao, the older sister who worked so hard to help her family has recently married. A little late for the average Vietnamese - she is in her mid to late 20s. But she always worked so much and was so quiet and shy and conservative - so little wonder.

Now she is 7 months pregnant also. She will have a baby girl.

But - her heart is not good and the strain of carrying a baby has made the problem reveal itself in a life threatening form. She is dying and not sure whether she'll make it to child birth or if she does how long she can love her baby for.

In the most recent email she sent me she said that she actually died for a few minutes recently. She was taken to hospital where they told her to stay overnight for further checks and for safety. But she cannot. She has no money. She went home. And cried.

Currently all her family work to produce enough to buy her medicine and to feed the family. Dao is too weak to work.

I have sent her about $150 which will buy her medicine for a month and a half.

Next month I will scrape together the money to visit her and give her whatever else I can. But I don't have much.

Can you help? Will you help?

If quite a number of people help in a small way they can make a huge difference to Dao, her baby, her family and even my family and I.

Maybe just stay home one night and give the amount you'd spend on dinner out and alcohol.

Please help if you can.

She is very scared. Any day could be her last. She doesn't want to say good bye to her family and she wants to take care of her child.

Maybe the people at travel pod will help set up a way to send me money - I think there is a way to donate via my blogs, but???

Thanks

Have a good day.

I was just thinking - if there were 100 people that would give $10, that is huge and could pay for Dao to stay in hospital or pay for her heart drugs for a long time and give her family the chance to work and save money for their future.

Anyone can help organise that?

I will definitely put in $10 or $100 - so we just need 90 more people.

Possible???

Hi Paul, I just talked with Luc and we decided we'd like to donate $50 from TravelPod.

I'll put it in your "Support My Travels" section, but I think yours is deactivated at the moment. Just reactivate it, let me know when you've done that, and I'll put in a deposit to get you started.

Best thing mate is to drop us an email with the details. I should still be able to do an Aussie transaction, but I'll have to check..

Hi,

Thanks everyone.
air_kiss.gif

I just fiddled about with PayPal and the "support my travels" thing and as far as I know you should be able to donate via that. Can someone please give it a go and let us know if it worked and how you did it?

Thanks again. Take care.

Hi,

This morning my mum put AU$200 into my account to help Dao. (Mum doesn't have much money and she looks after my 94 year old grandmother).

I have around $500 now.

THANKS!!! Thanks to everyone for their generosity. flowers.png

If you know anyone else that would be interested in helping out - please ask them.

Dao just wrote to me - even if she stays in hospital for just 2 - 3 weeks - prior to and a little after the birth - it will cost her around $1500.

So even if I double what I currently have with my own money - it isn't enough.

Is there anyone else out there that can help a little? console.gif

This is some of what Dao just wrote to me:
"Hi,
I dont know how much does it cost if i go and stay at the hospital now.But i know i must go and stay at the hospital 10days before baby come and 7or 10days more affter baby come cost about 20 000 000vnd.And i dont know what happen affter baby come,i could go home or stay at the hospital,it depending my heart. So i cant stay at the hospital now,im sorry.
Now im just lie in bed to keep my heart work,i hope im lucky,it will be ok..."

Hi Jacques,

Firstly thanks very much.

Just guessing that will be about Au$50.

Yes, please put it in through the donation button and I grab that before I go. Hopefully booking flights to Vietnam this afternoon.

I think if we can make a big dint into the Dao's medical expenses - her family may be able to borrow the rest and pay it off over time. I will be able to help them more over time too. So hopefully things will work out with the amount of help that has come in.

When I went to make the payment the paypal system showed me the calculation so I ended up sending you 70.00 AUD.

Good luck with the quest and I will keep mentioning it to friends and if I collect more I will send it along!

Thanks.

Oh, that is good about the exchange. (Aghhh, too many exchange rates in my head right now).

Dao sounds pretty sad and depressed, but she is alive and so is her baby, so that is the main thing. Hopefully visiting will help cheer her up, but I am also scared it will put strain on her heart. But I think being happy is almost always a good medicine.

I think if we can get her to the hospital in plenty of time before the birth, they have machines that can help keep both alive and so her chances should be good.

Anyway, that's it for now. I will update things after my visit.

Thanks again.

Update.

I am leaving home tomorrow and heading to Hoi An, Vietnam to meet Dao. She is still alive and OK and emailed me just a couple of days ago. I have US$820 and think that I may get up to US$1142 to be able to give to Dao to help her.

From research it seems her problem is a heart valve problem.

Not much more I can tell you at the moment. I will let you know more (if I know more) when I return.
