[size=7]Hello, I live in Ft Lauderdale, FL and really like it here. My latest career has been in travel, currently on an employment website, JOB.TRAVEL. Just started so only in Florida now, will soon expand nationwide and then global. As part of the same company I worked for Future Vacations(FutureVacations.com) and booked trips. One nice thing is suppliers would visit and give away hotel stay. I won a few nights in Paris, and got a few more and the rest is history. I found cheap($400 RT) air that year. The next was a 2-4-1 on Delta to Rome, then a cruise to Eastern Med and then Western Med. This year is a Caribbean cruise in early December. I cannot wait. Planning next years cruise from Rio to Buenos Aries. I first went international in 1978 for a high school trip to Spain, loved it, have also been to London in Europe. Have visited a few islands, Antigua(3X), Bermuda(2X) and St. Martin. Have traveled across the US, and do weekend trips to Orlando and Key West, both are less than 4 hours drive. blink.gif

Cool tim, welcome to the forums. You've got a lot of travel experience, that's for sure.

It's lucky that you live in Florida, so close to the Caribbean, it's such a fun place to visit.

What's your favourite island?

I have really enjoyed all three in the Caribbean for different reasons. Bermuda is definitely the most 'civilized'. The one island I was surprised at was Corsica on the last Mediterranean cruise. It was much more mountainous than I expected.

Yeah, I would love to go to Bermuda, it was where my parents went for their honeymoon and they STILL talk about it!

Where does your cruise in December stop?

It leaves Ft Lauderdale so no flight involved, it goes to Grand Cayman, Cartegena in Columbia, Panama Canal, Costa Rica and Cozumel. I cannot wait.

I hate to support a guy who is pimping out our travel forums just to advertise for his own personal gain, but I do have to admit that Cartagena is AMAZING!!!!!!

I coul;d be wrong (and it won't be the first time) but it seems like every time soneone has less than ten total posts and is all of a suddent raving about a specific place is advertising it for their own good.

Well considering I only registered last week, and I do have a job, I cannot post all the trips I have gone on or wish to go on in such a short period of time.

Hi, Tim! I'm excited to see a Lauderdale native suddenly active on the boards.

Can I ask some questions about Ft. Lauderdale?

I stayed there 4-5 days in May 2007. I absolutely LOVED the beach, so beautiful, clean, and accessible. But my experience with the town was....not great. I came to the conclusion that Lauderdale just isn't the place for a girl on a budget. I couldn't find sufficient information about public transportation (Online, the routes are incomprehensible to an outsider, and in town there was no information or station in the two areas where we stayed), the food was WAY overpriced in even the worst places we tried (we accidentally had a round, a martini and a beer, for $50), etc etc.

If you want a full account of my time there, check out my blog: My Lauderdale Travel Blog

My question for you, Tim, is how the average person can enjoy Ft. Lauderdale without selling everything they own.

I read you blog, and I have been to Big City twice, once on a date, other person paying and when a rich friend of mine was in town, too $$$ for me. The Las Olas area is the Ft Lauderdale version of Rodeo drive and has some of the most expensive places to eat and drink in town. It appeals to the 'snowbirds' during the winter and from wealthy South Americans here for shopping trips. Just further west of the Las Olas area is Himmeshee where on Friday nights, its 3-4-1 drinks and a much younger atmosphere.
The bus system isn't that hard to figure out here, and if you call the service and tell them where you are and where you want to go they will tell you which routes to take. I ride the system all the time. And the main bus station is about a 10 minute walk from the Riveside hotel. I work in downtown and can see both from the break room. I have taken a combo of bus/train to get to downtown Miami a few years ago for a total of $5.
There are lots of places to eat cheap here if you stay off Las Olas. I had a really great lunch at a place called Aruba in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea(next beach up) a week ago. Was $12.99 for a large piece of blackened salmon beans/rice and veggies or a HUGE piece of friend groupper on a sandwich. And I like diner food so hit a few of those around town, the Floridian on the east end of Las Olas is good, lots of food and VERY interesting clientele, especially at 2am on a Saturday morning.

Ft Lauderdale is not expensive at all. It is the cheap man's answer to South Beach!

A great and inexpensive day for me is driving to Las Olas beach which is world famous and tons of fun. Across the street is Elbow Room where you can enjoy drinks out by the beach and on a balcony. Then go down 3 blocks to Beach Place which is full of bars and restaurants.

There is a special that goes on at the restaurants here during this time of year. It is Dine Out Ft Lauderdale. The top places in town have a three course meal offered for I think it is $35 per person this year. The places participating are the ones you always walk by and say I would like to eat there, but it is too $$$. There is a link to the restaurants on Sunny.org, which is the official website of Ft Lauderdale.
