Flying into Vegas from the UK, and have a 20+ hour lay over. My g/f and I would like to leave the Las Vegas airport to get a hotel and do some shopping for the night. My question is, since we are "in transit" are we allowed to leave the airport and head into Vegas before our flight home to Canada? I've tried to call and email our Orbitz travel agent but no luck. I hope to get some good input from the travelers on here. Cheers!

QUOTE(mmbcross @ Dec 30 2008, 12:03 AM) QUOTE(jeremystravels @ Dec 29 2008, 01:47 PM) I don't know how they could physically restrict you once you pass through passport control (but I can imagine there are some forms you need to fill out, not sure if any are additional or not in terms of the fact that you are already there.
Well Jeremy, an immigration inspector can certainly detain you on passing through immigration at any international airport in the United States. If you don't have the right papers, you just won't get through passport control at all. If your connection is in twenty hours, then you will wait in the transit lounge for twenty hours. Food and bev is on your dime. Be sure to check with your airline before you attempt this. QUOTE(jeremystravels @ Dec 30 2008, 12:44 PM) QUOTE(mmbcross @ Dec 30 2008, 12:03 AM)

I know that they can detain you, but I am saying once you make it through (assuming you do in fact make it through) I don't think there is much they could do to stop you. I can't imagine it being very hard for someone from Britain or Canada being allowed to go see the city on a long layover. Might be more difficult for other nationalities but this is just me speculating. If you have the correct paperwork to get into a country, doesn't that mean you 'get in'? Someone explain this to me. Maybe I'm just having a dense moment? As far as I have understood, in any country I have had layovers in, which is many, I have always been able to get out and back through security to catch another flight, whether I have been in trasnit or just going and coming. This doesn't mean that's for everywhere I guess but I have never been aware of any other rules. Oh...if you need, say, an immunization...but then you wouldn't be allowed to land, would you? I also realize that any immigration official can stop you anywhere, but that goes anywhere.

Oh my goodness, PEOPLE! Snap out of it! It's so simple! These are Canadians "flying home to Canada", and they are coming home from the UK. So obviously, they will have their passports with them...There will NOT be a problem, unless they are carrying illegal substances...and I'm almost positive they won't be. Just show the border guards your passports, stow your luggage somewhere and shop the night away!
