Is there any public transport yet connecting the west and east coasts of Taiwan and passing through Meishan?

Hey there! The only way to get across Taiwan is on a bus. There are trains...but they run mostly coastal routes.

Thanks Athena, but are you able to confirm that buses do run all the way across, the latest "Rough Guide" implies that there is a short gap in the services and that you cannot actually go all the way across.

Thanks for your help

Hi Dave. You can definitely take a bus from Kaohsiung to Kenting...which is quite south. It's a popular route and so buses leave constantly. From Kenting however there is not much elsewhere you can go...except back to Kaohsiung. You might get lucky and find a van or something heading up to Pingtung....where you might find transport up to Taitung. So...I would suggest going from Kaohsiung to Taitung. You can take a bus or a train...they are quite frequent.
