I was having this discussion yesterday and it sounds like an easy question but it's not.

Out of all of the places you have been, which one is the best?

Why?

If you have one and are not currently living there, please also tell me why you are not living there at the moment.

Portugal, Greece, Peru, Brazil.

Am considering all four, but haven't made up my mind yet.

Considering all four places to live in?

Which part of these countries? Brazil is huge!

Best? I don't think there's any such thing. It's not about labelling the country, it's about who you are at the time and what you get out of each individual experience. It's about the journey not the destination.

Three years ago I never ever thought anything would ever top New Zealand. Now I realise that was a stupid thing to think. I was simply exloding with excitement at that stage in my life. Don't get me wrong it will always take some beating in terms of raw natural beauty, but I've since had 'other' experiences and so I'm not the same bloke I was when I was there. Not at all. And that's the point.

Back then I would have said it was the most amazing country on the planet - the world's 'best kept secret'. Now I would say it's 'boringly safe'. Like I've said before it's all about where you're 'at' in the here and now.

I think it will always remain in my top however many. Live there? Sure, absolutely - it's magic, but then I could live many places. Why aren't I living there now? I'm out discovering those places. Ask me again in in a few years..

Heeeee, yeah I know what you mean Scott. But it's interesting to know where people are at in this point of their lives. Don't you think?

So your short answer at the moment is no place?

I think I would have the same answer as you right now anyway. "Working on it, ask me later".

I do have a special place in my heart for Mexico City though...

I haven't seen enough of the world to give a fair answer.

But so far Paris gets the top spot - I have been four times and I love the place. I will be very sad when my sister moves away from there next year and I don't have as much of an excuse to go!

And Whitby gets a special mention. It is gothic brilliance and I love it. More second hand bookshops that you can get round in a weekend.

Scott's point is well taken. However, I will answer your question. smile.gif

I love Paris!!!! Of course, that isn't much of a secret.

I don't live there because I haven't saved up enough money yet. But we are working on it. And we are gearing up even more now than before. In fact, I'm selling my car and getting an inexpensive one to help with the process. So we are SERIOUS about moving there!

No joke.

The best place I have been so far has to be the South of France, mainly St Paul d'Vance. I love it (not necessarily because its France) but because these small historical medieval towns just blowme away and I would love to live in one, whether its in France, Spain or Italy! I dont live there right now as I live in Japan, so can't be in two places at once! LOL!

Oh definitely Bali! The reason I am not living there right now is because I am Indian and live in Bombay....and its difficult for us to relocate abroad. I have longterm plans though....

I'd go with Wozzy on this one too. I choose the places I travel based on who I am at the time. I think that makes total sense. They were all the 'best' places b/c they've all given me many gifts as I've traveled through those countries. Each holds its own special appeal for different reasons. Definitely has to do with how my life was at the time, and how I was at the time. I got out of those experiences what I needed to get out of them to continue on my journey through life. Life wouldn't be the same if I took away even one of those trips/experiences.

I certainly have a huge soft spot for Thailand and for Laos. I LOVE Canada (where I currently live). Really loved Cambodia too. If I could live anywhere it would be somewhere life was more simplified, less complicated than here. Somewhere in Asia though I know that doesn't narrow it down! We have much more of Asia to discover first. I think one day we will move away......

Hmmmm - honestly, same as others have said on here, it depends on what I'm looking for at any given time.

Right now though we are actually talking about 'settling down' somewhere - not in the sense of staying there forever but having a permanent base that we can store our stuff in - not that we have much! After spending about 20 years between us in Japan and working out how much we have spent on rent over the years - well it's just frightening.

The 2 places we are ummming and ahhing between at the moment are Southern Italy and Northern Brazil. Decisions, decisions.....

The idea is that we will travel as much of the world as we can while always having somewhere to come back to frantics.gif

So far my favorite place out of the 16 countries I've been to has been Lauterbrunnen Switzerland. Little tiny mountain town at the base of Eiger, Jungfrau, and Monch mountains. Quite a sleepy little town. I could totally get used to the quiet life style and just own a bunch of sheep so I can put tons of tiny bells on them and watch them run around all day. Also, since it is up in the mountains there are a lot of mountainous activities that can be done. It was quite beautiful to look out the patio on our chalet and see 3 mountains off in the distance, a tiny stream going by and a waterfall off the cliff to our right, with sheep bleating and bells ringing in a pin to our left.

Absolutely impossible to answer. The answer could be different on any given day depending on my mood or memories. I could have one answer for history, one for experiences and one for beauty. I love my world and all its countries.

I was having this discussion yesterday and it sounds like an easy question but it's not.

Out of all of the places you have been, which one is the best?

Why?

If you have one and are not currently living there, please also tell me why you are not living there at the moment.

I'm with Scott on this one on two counts:
New Zealand is in my top 2 or 3 - lived there for a couple of years, loved the attitude of the people as well as the amazing variety and beauty of the country. Very importantly met husband there!
There are lots more places for me to see and what I'm doing at the time matters just as much as the place.

Currently live in Edinburgh - which is wonderful: beautiful city, fantastic history and architecture; lots going on. 2 children in schools.

The catch with New Zealand is it's so far away from most other places, catch with Edinburgh is the weather.

Got lots more places to find. flowers.png

Going to have to agree with Scott. Travelling for 10 years now and I have been through many phases and have grown.....

I love so many places for so many different reasons and no two are the same. But I would have to say out of all my travels, Africa and Cambodia are the two places that will always be at the top...(so far). Africa, because it is the only place that I can close my eyes and still feel, smell and hear the sounds. Cambodia, because it surprisingly took my breath away, the culture, the people, the history and the landscape.. i really cannot describe it.
