I was reading this article this morning, and I just copied the paragraph below:

"At minus 5C, the cold is quite refreshing and a light hat and scarf are all that's required to keep warm. At minus 20C, the moisture in your nostrils freezes, and the cold air starts making it difficult not to cough. At minus 35C, the air will cold enough to numb exposed skin quickly, making frostbite a constant hazard. And at minus 45C, even wearing glasses gets tricky: the metal sticks to your cheeks and will tear off chunks of flesh when you decide to remove them".
Of course the whole article for you to read and find out which is the coldest city on earth is HERE:

Tell us what was the lowest temperature you have experienced in your life and what you remember from it.
Mine was in North Greece (Kozani) ...we were staying there for a year many many years ago, and the lowest temperature was 15 degrees below zero.

(I just heard the weather forecast and the temperature in the outskirts of Athens (Parnitha) is -7 degrees) It is freezing outside as well.

The photo on that article is really neat! Though I'm sure minus 40C is not recommended for my camera!

I used my Canon PowerShot at temps of -40 without a problem. The key is not to keep it exposed to the cold too long (put it in a ziploc and in your parka when not in use) and when you bring it inside, keep it in the ziploc until it reaches room temperature so condensation isn't an issue.

My coldest temperature experience in Canada's Arctic was -64 degrees C wind chill. Actually
-40 is tolerable if the wind is not a factor and you are properly clothed. However, frostbite is definitely not to be taken lightly and once you get it, that area of your skin/body is more susceptible.

Actually, I think I was more insane the time I went skijoring with my dogs and didn't check the temperature. I was bundled up very well but at a wind chill temp of -55, I ended up getting frostbite on the only exposed part of my body which was my eyelids....hahaha...

If the weather conditions are -50 degrees hyper.gif what is really the temperature in your homes? Is it -10 for instance, and how much do you have to pay for electricity or gas a month?
Can somebody inform us?

I keep the temperature between 20 to 22 the maximum inside the house but when I visit some friends houses they have the temperature set at 25 degrees which I find too extreme!

My brother and I used to wait for the bus in -40C weather in front of snowdrifts nearly as big as we were back in Westlock, Alberta, Canada. No foolin'.

It amused me to walk around Tokyo in a t-shirt in +5 weather while all the locals were shivering.

In Arctic conditions, homes need to be very well insulated with triple-paned windows and the highest R-rating insulation. As well, any exposed sewage or water lines need to have heat traces to prevent freeze-up which can be a real problem if pipes burst. Under these condtions, it is not a problem to have your home at 20 degrees in extreme temperatures although the fuel bills can be quite outrageous. The homes I lived in all had oil-burning furnaces and fortunately, fuel bills were subsidized by the government!
