We read that most agencies use mules or horses on the Lares and Salkantay trails. We don't feel comfortable about this. Does anybody know how these horses are treated? Are they in a good shape? Can someone recommend an agency that does not use animals and has well-treated (and well-paid) porters?

In a place you're not familiar with, it's virtually impossible to tell if the animals are well-treated. If you are really uncomfortable with mistreated animals, don't even take the chance of using them.

People, you can at least talk to them, and you can read about other companies on blogs! Luckily, you're at a website that has tons of them ; )

Here is one that might help from Lares:

And from Salkantay:

Here is some information you might consider in respect to porter welfare:

Pack animals are now banned from the true Inca Trail, though are still used on the alternative trails, though I can find nothing online about animal welfare. Llamas are very particular animals. If you overload them or mistreat them, they just sit down and wont budge under any circumstances.
