Over the years I have been lucky enough to be travelling during my birthday.....
  • Lazing in a park on a summer day in London (my very first hot birthday!)
  • Partying in Temple Bar, Dublin
  • Camping on Vancouver Island, Canada
  • Sipping cocktails at sunset overlooking the Arabian Gulf, Dubai

to name but a few.....

Which countries have you celebrated your birthday in and what did you do to celebrate it?

- Xi'an, China visiting the Terracotta Warriors and then getting steaming drunk clubbing 2 nights in a row.
- Ljubljana, Slovenia - Getting drunk on countless Jagerbombs.
- Unawatuna, Sri Lanka - Spending 10 hours on a local bus to get to the beach for a beer (or 10)

Rich, there is a theme to your birthday parties, isn't there?

For me, I've never been out of the country on my birthday! It's in September, so it was always back to school time, or end of the traveling season/back to work time.

Once I had my birthday at Girl Guide camp up in northern Ontario. Does that count?

Of course it still counts, you were still traveling (even if it was with Girl Guides smile.gif)

I had my birthday in Miami, Florida once before going on a cruise to the Caribbean. I think have not gone anywhere else on my birthday before, we took most of our trips during the summer even though mine was almost always on spring break.

I hope to be in India/Nepal area on my birthday in 2011 though! If the timing works out well I could very well be near Everest Base Camp around my 25th birthday.

Yes, many times I find it as an excuse and we are on a trip on that day.
I book a nice hotel and we fly to different places because I love travelling.
With this excuse, my husband does not say anything!

We have been once in Koh Samui in Thailand,
In Paris twice for our birthdays
In Cyprus 2 times
In the USA.
In London once.

It's a nice excuse, and you avoid washing dishes, and cooking for friends.

Hmm...the one that comes to mind is Paris.

My son and I celebrated our birthdays together at Disneyland Paris with a birthday tea party there.

I think I've mainly been in England, just munching away on cake and good food! But maybe in Spain a couple of times, cause my birthday always fell on half term when I was still in school... nothing massively memorable.. yet...

My birthday is always on a long weekend in the summer time so it is a rare year when I'm home. Usually it is celebrated with family at the cottage, but there are 2 others that really stand out:

13th birthday camping in Dawson City, Yukon. This was my parents idea of a fun trip for a teenager. At the time it was horrifying to be in the middle of nowhere for my birthday but looking back it is very unique. I think we had a camp fire. I remember I got a game boy which was helpful for the long drive/ferry trip back to Vancouver.

24th birthday on a boat in Nha Trang, Vietnam. I was backpacking solo through South East Asia after university. 30 Vietnamese tourists on the boat sang me Happy Birthday, I drank red wine with pineapple pieces while floating in the South China Sea, did some snorkling and then two random French boys (they were like 17) from the boat took me out for a birthday dinner because they wouldn't let me be alone on my birthday. One of those amazing travelling days shared with people you'll never see again, but who bend over backwards to make the day special.

Had my very first birthday in Stany, Poland. I obviously don't remember it, but I had it was quite the occasion (around the fall of communism and first time my dad had been back in years...cause for celebration was in the air).

Apparently there is a tradition that my family does, that on your very first birthday they place a bible, a dollar, and a shot glass in front of you. Bible symbolizing your future with the church, dollar symbolizing your future as a businessman, and the shot glass symbolizing your future as a drunk. Wanna guess which one I chose?

Let's just say that I've been seeing shot glasses every birthday since...

My birthday is another of those awkward times of the year - right in the middle of February. Because it's in the middle of school I usually have to remain on island for it. So that means I've celebrated birthdays in the Isle of Man, London, Nassau and various parts of Barbados tongue.gif Hopefully with this move I might get some variety now..

Although, Trinidad's 2-day long Carnival usually falls on my birthday week. So if I'm ever back on island for my birthday you'll know where I'm gonna be biggrin.gif

Singapore
France
Malaysia
Australia
USA
I'm not sure how well these compare considering all these countries except Australia were my home at the time of those birthdays.

RIO DE JANEIRO!!!!!

Was still drunk the next day, and really fancied a boiled egg which you can get at the local corner bars....only....I couldn't remember how to say 'hard boiled' or 'shell'.....so I asked for an "ovo com ropas" (an egg with its clothes on!) I thought it was creative...but the guy didn't get it, and some locals (who thought my description was 'inspired' btw once they realised) helped to translate laugh.gif

hyper.gif hyper.gif That's funny Kathryn, thanks for making me smile!

Yes, it is hard sometimes when in a foreign country we try to explain in their native language!

I decided once to have my birthday in Cypurs, so I got a ticket and flew down there.
I received lots and lots of presents from relatives, but also a huge bunch of yellow roses from my best girlfriend Xenia who knew about my birthday. We are like sisters!
It was the first time receiving yellow roses. Did you know that Yellow is the colour of friendship? flowers.png

My 30th is fast approaching and I'm not sure what to do. I've never had a party, normally a few drinks around the time, but since this one is the big one, I wanna do something. Thing is, people can never be arsed going anywhere that isn't their local. So I'm thinking of getting a cheap flight to Europe and being alone instead. Better than being at home alone!

When is your birthday? Have you time to do a '29 things to do before you're 30' list?
