I love to travel alone - I went with a BF (he became an ex on day 4 I think!). I have also been with a class mate - and it was ideal - someone for the train/plane/bus, but all by myself in Rome, and then we rejoined to get back to our country town in France. The only time I wish I travelled with someone is meal times - namely dinner, but I have met some interesting people in hostels and done dinner with them, and that's been more eye opening that with some travel partner.

Meanwhile, my parents (almost married for 30years) have a theory - if you can travel with someone, and enjoy it, they might just be 'the one' (I suppose that doesn't mean 'barely tolerating them!)

I always travel alone, I went to live in London when I was 21, and from there at 24 went travelling solo to Mexico, the initial reason was that I was heartbroken, but now I think it was destiny as I had the time of my life, met loads of people and learn loads of things about myself.

Aw... heartbroken traveling... I think that good things like that trip happen to you when you're ready and it seems like you were more than ready to learn and meet great people!

After my divorce back in 2003, a friend of mine from Ireland who had moved to Saudi Arabia got me to go to Bahrain to meet her and some of her friends for Christmas and New Year! I loved it so much I went back for St Paddy's Day (March 2004), and ended up moving to Bahrain on my own in May of 2004! I spent two years there and then went to Japan, where I am now with my partner and our toddler, who was born here in Japan in December 2006! A few people at home said I wouldn't last 6 months on my own in a foreign country, but I proved them wrong, I managed to find work, accommodation and new friends and a new partner and now we have a baby! party.gif

Wow that's a nice story. It's so hopeful after such a hard decision and difficult time in your life! Good on you for proving everybody wrong!

Human beings want nothing to do with me so I'm always alone. But I see the advantages to traveling alone. I don't have to wait for anyone to be ready or be hurried by anyone waiting for me. There's no one to accuse me of stealing something which they've misplaced. There are no arguments over where to go, what to see, what to do, or when. Still I miss sharing all this with someone.

Not the reason to travel alone. I travel alone cos' it's what I do, and it also it means I get to meet more people. Sharing the trip temporarily with someone only enhances the experience..

I agree with your words. Of course, when I travel it is for shorter bursts than Scott, but I do like to travel alone and I do it yearly. This summer I was in China traveling on my own completely for 3 weeks before meeting up with my wife in India. I have to say that traveling alone and then later with her BOTH had their positives and negatives. It was fun to see my wife and share experiences with her, but at the same time she is a completely different traveler than me and that part was difficult!!

A little both. I like traveling with my friends, but I need at least a little time on my own to explore.

I think who you travel with is definitely important.

I travel with my husband John nowadays, he definitely enhances my travel experience - and mostly because we laugh at things that happen together.
