There have been a number of discussions on this forum about bars and clubs over-serving alcohol to patrons. I know I've posted before that here in Ontario the servers can be held responsible for accidents and deaths if they overserve clientele but it's not been until now that I've heard of this actually happeneing.

Well, low and behold;

Ontario golf club charged in fatal crash[/url]

It's happened.

The fallout from an infamous Muskoka crash last summer that killed three young men and prompted sweeping changes to provincial driving laws continued yesterday as 16 staff members, managers and executives of a golf club were charged with serving the victims too much alcohol.

Now, I'm wondering. This accident was infamous. Did the wheels start turning because it was such a high profile case? Nonetheless, I think it's high time this happened, to remind people who serve alcohol that they do have to take some responsibility for their positions. The law has always stated that.

"The 16 accused — just three of whom were working at the restaurant that day — are due in court in Bracebridge, Ont., later this month. They're charged with supplying liquor to people who are apparently intoxicated and permitting drunkenness on a licensed premises, a lesser charge.

The take-home message is that we take these types of breaches seriously," said Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Ed Medved, who heads the Bracebridge detachment investigating the crash. "You can't just go out and sell drinks to people without consequences, the law is quite clear on that."

What do you guys think? Is this a fair judgment? Unfair?

Hmmm, wonder if it would be taken as seriously if the losers that drove that intoxicated weren't so well off.

I am curious how the 13 club people not working that day can also be charged unless there is documented proof that they previously had been "supplying liquor to people who are apparently intoxicated and permitting drunkenness on a licensed premises"?

BTW, it took me a while to realize that it wasn't a "golf club" (as in the type used to hit a golf ball) that was being referred in the thread title.....hahahaha! OK, it is morning here.... yawn.gif Time for a cup of tea!

I also have no doubts that the economic status of the deceased played a role in the action that has followed!

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. It's not like that hasn't happened before at any other bar or club.

Totally. That's the piss-off. It really ticks me off. Sometimes I hate how the world works. It makes me wonder if we really are making any progress sad.gif
