Sorry - I do my best not to post stuff like this just asking for bus times but I'm struggling to make the connections so any advice from anyone with experience of the route would be appreciated.

I need to go from Quito to Lima from the 29/12 to 08/01. I know this isn't enough time to really enjoy it but there it is.

What I'm currently planning is a few days in Quito and one full day in Cotopaxi before continuing on. The two routes I'm considering at the moment are:

1) Cotopaxi - Latacunga - Cuenca - Loja - Piura - Lima

2) Cotopaxi - Latacunga - Guayquil - Lima (this one I know is the most viable but probably the least enjoyable)

So my specific questions are:

1) I've heard of a bus route directly from Loja to Lima (which I guess would connect at Piura) but I can't find it online. Does anyone have any details of this?

2) Is there anyway to book a single journey from Cuenca to Lima (or even Trujillo) - it seems awkward to go back up to Guayquil or south to Loja?

3) Is it possible to go by bus from Latacunga to Guayaquil?

More broadly - any ideas or advice would really be appreciated.

Transportation shouldn't be a worry in Latin America, there are buses from everywhere to everywhere, every day. Some may well be little more than chicken buses for locals, and this being the case you will not find their timetables online. If I were you, and as long as you don't mind an occasional uncomfortable local banger, I would map out my itinerary and just go.

The only international service I know of is Ormeno, which runs directly from Quito, Guayaquil and Loja to Lima. You cannot book online yet, but I suggest you visit their office in Quito to see if they will sell segments to you.
