A magnificent amphitheatre is just one of the superb remains found in the ancient city of Leptis Magna.

The ancient city of Leptis Magna stands on the Mediterranean coast, about one hourís drive from the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

Founded by the Phoenicians in 1100 BC, the city reached the height of its prosperity at the end of the second century AD, when Lucius Septimus Severus, a native son of the city, became the 21st Roman emperor.

To date, only around 35 per cent of Leptis Magna has been excavated, although much of what visitors can see of the city remains relatively intact. Highlights include the expansive forum, Hadrianic baths and the impressive harbour, now partially submerged by the tide.

The biggest draw is the amphitheatre, which was constructed on the outskirts of the city to allow easy access for the crowds travelling to attend a spectacle. Here, the wild animal traps are still intact and the stadium acoustics magnify the roar of the sea.
