Does anyone know how many cartons (10 packs) we can bring in as personal without paying duty taxes on them? I am going to be traveling to UK after my husband passes to visit some friends. We will be there 3 weeks and would like to bring my mates cigarettes.

Here's UK customs limitations from non EU countries. It's still only 200 cigarettes (one carton).

I guess if we are bringing our own personal use, I will not be bringing for my mates. Last time I was there it was about $9 a pack!!! That has been almost 3 yrs ago. I sure they have increased since then even.
Thanks for the info.

I know, ciggies are incredibly expensive in the UK. Another good reason for giving up.

How much would duty really be though? Sometimes it's worth it to pay it. Also, couldn't you bring some from the duty free shop at the airport?

The limit to coming into the UK from a non EU country is 200 cigarettes per person. It is currently about £5 ($10) a pack of 20. It is not worth taking extra in and paying the duty, you would end up paying the same as the street price.

You can also bring in 1 litre of spirits plus 2 litres of still wine per person plus goods up to the value of £145 each. If you have over £145'sworth you will have to pay duty on ALL of the goods e.g. if your goods were £200 you pay duty on £200';sworth not 200-145=£55sworth.

Once you are through Immigration and Customs you do not have access to the duty free shops ibn the airport.

I was stopped by Customs at Heathrow last week and told the limit was 200 cigarettes and that the duty per carton was in the region of £50-60 for anything over this amount. I had 800 but the Customs lady very kindly let me keep them without paying any duty.
