In 2002 in the UK, one in every 109 £1 coins was a fake. Today it's one in 40. A former counterfeiter reveals how to spot the fake in your pocket... and asks the question: bearing in mind you can't swap one for legal tender, would you throw yours in the bin?

And yet if you go to the bank and get a bag of pound coins you can guarantee THEY have not checked for counterfiets as long as the money weighs right that's all that matters.

So be careful out there if a sharp eyed shop assistant notices that you've given a fake the nthey could call the police as it does become a crime to use fake coins

I was completely not aware of this. I thought a country like UK will have better control over such issues.

Unfortunately not andthe banks don't help =as long as they weigh right they are acceptable and as peole weigh in coins in £20 bags they are not checked individually either.

It appears in some cities London especially they estimate that 1 in 4 £1 coins is a fake
