When I was over in NZ one of the guides on a tour I did told me that they actually have the worlds largest canyon in NZ, bigger than America's Grand Canyon.. Yes, it seems there are a number of deep canyons/trenches off the NZ coast which appear to be related or extensions of the very evident Tonga Trench to the north. If you have the downloaded the very latest version of GoogleEarth, which provides awesome views of the ocean floor, you can really see these relationships quite well. It always amazes me how we are spending so much time and energy trying to understand our universe when we still have so little idea what is happening below our ocean waters.
