Hi there. I am heading to canada at the start of january for a year from the uk. initially i will be living in toronto for the first 5 or 6 month then im off on a road trip round the rest of canada for the last 6 months. does anyone have any suggestions of good routes to see the most of the place in 6 months, i deffintly want to visit vancouver and the rockies. any ideas?

From Toronto you can easily visit Ottawa since it is only a 4.5 hour drive from Toronto or take a bus. You can come and see the longest canal in the world, visit the Canadian parliament, the Canadian Mint, The National Gallery and there are several other places to visit, and don't forget while in Ottawa to visit the TravelPod office as we are locatied in downton Ottawa a short walk from the Parliament buildings .....

That way you don't have to take any of your last 6 months in visiting it!

Hey Lauren,
The road out west from Toronto is straightforward and lovely once you start getting closer to the mountains. What else do you think you'd like to see? Are you thinking of going out east too or just touring around out west? That's a hek of alot of driving if you want to road trip around the entire country but if you have six months.......

That's definitely doable in six months! What a great trip that would be. What kind of car are you driving? If it's in the winter you might want four wheel drive, depending on how far you want to go into the wilderness. (Not all the roads are plowed all the time)

Hi thank you for your replys so far, very helpfull. Im not sure what else id like to see yet, i read something about the yellowhead highway saying it was an amazing drive? anyone know anything about that?
I would love to visit ottawa and the offer of the couch is great..thanks very much!
I will be driving through summer and fall so hopfully i wont hit too many bad weather conditions..
If you were doing the same road trip and had to pick a top 5 places to see around canada (anywhere atall) what do you think you would pick?...

1. Victoria
2. Vancouver
3. Canmore (strange choice but it is really really beautiful here)
4. Toronto
5. Halifax

Edit...please add Niagara Falls to that (it can fit in with Toronto)

Excellent! yeah alot of people have told me to go to victoria... I last visited canada when i was around 15 years old and have been to niagra and also seen a fair bit of toronto, but that was with the parents and well you know its the not the same is it...so i am really looking forward to exploring these places again on my own..
thanks for the top 5 i am going to have a little browse on the internet at some of the places, and so some planning...i need a big map and some pins...

yes I am, I fly out on the 8th of Jan, I have a bit of family in brantford so i will stay with them for the first month, then I am going to Toronto and will get a place to live there for around 5 months, earn some money buy a banger and hit the road..
Im a little scared but really excited..eeek

You really need to add Montreal to this list! It would be a total shame to visit Canada and not experience the Francophone culture and, in my opinion, our most interesting and cosmopolitan city.

When you say buy a banger do you mean that you plan to Drive to Vancouver and Victoria????That is a drive of a few thousand miles!!!

yes i plan to drive..not all at once, breaking it up over the months, stopping here for a bit and then stopping there for a while.. and montreal is definatly added to my list....ive been wanting to visit montreal for a while, i heard good things.

You're absolutely right...

Here's my amended list...I'm smooshing some things in because they are relatively close together.

1. Victoria/Vancouver
2. Canmore/Banff
3. Ottawa/Montreal
4. Toronto/Niagara Falls
5. Halifax

Ottawa is pretty cool, there are some beautiful canals and parks. You can see Parliament. There are a bunch of museums to visit as well. I LOVE the national art gallery.
Also! TravelPod's in Ottawa, so you can come and visit us and we'll put you on the wall of fame.
