O.K. so, our beach resorts. Wilmington is nothing if not a beach town first, and naturally, we have a handful of so so resorts to decide from. Not as many as you might think, but I guess that's what we have Myrtle Beach for. But here goes anyways with our short list of oceanfront resorts: WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort Rooms: 184 amenities: oceanfront, pools, indoor and outdoor, restaurant, 24 hour desk, conference room, grocery/convenience store, atm, wi-fi, spa, poolside bar, free parking, rooms have 32 inch flat screen tvs, cd players, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, iron/ironing board, you know, all the basics, plus some.
price: between $200 and $300 a night at the highest (all rooms are checked memorial day weekend- the highest price usually all season)
Blockade Runner Beach Resort down the other end of the beach from Sunspree Amenities: oceanfront, pools indoor and outdoor, bar/lounge, conference room, room service, shop, room amenties fairly comparable to Sunspree.
Price: $189 to $329 a night
Let this be proof of why the best way to see Wrightsville beach is through your own personally rented condo. C'mon big hotel companies: build us a mega resort! not one of those ones in Myrtle Beach where the rooms are only so-so, but one like Atlantis in the Bahamas!
Sigh....let us continue with a much cooler and newer resort. CAROLINA BEACH
Courtyard Marriott Carolina Beach New, 10 floor, 144 room resort, that may actually be the nicest hotel of all in New Hanover County. Includes pools inside and out, oceanfront views, restaurant, room service, wifi and in rooms, separate tubs and showers, video games, balconies, and the norm. IT may not be the Ritz-Carlton, but it IS this author's pick of where to stay in Wilmington, even over the Hilton Riverside.
Price: $209-$224 a night
