Gotta love the internet! I just received an e-mail today from the sister of a fellow I met while travelling in South America. I visited him in Columbia, stayed at his sister's home and had a wonderful experience with her family.
But I lost their address and life moved on. Now, 17 years later.....a wonderful surprise of an e-mail.

Have you ever had a similar experience?

Aw, that's sweet. I have had that happen before!

I went to Mexico and the Yukon in Girl Guides, with a young lady from Montreal.

I went to visit her when I turned 18, but that was the last time we talked.

Facebook became popular and I just randomly decided to look her up. I found her and would you believe we were both working for newspapers in our respective cities?

It was pretty neat. I have surfed her couch a couple of times in Montreal, but she has never come to see me in Ottawa. I guess the friendship isn't exactly mutual! *pout*

It is nice to have a friend I can count on there though. She has saved my butt a couple of times, that's for sure.

On my first solo journey I met a guy from Germany who became a very good friend. Five years down the line we hooked up briefly in Thailand, where we first met. He was visiting with his lady friend. He had been to Thailand every year for about eighteen years running. I was going through some rough stuff in the beginning of my trip and he sorted me right out. He's still a very dear friend and we keep in touch regularly.

My husband and I met a couple on our first trip, both from England, who, ironically enough, have family right outside our city. We keep in touch and they've come over here once. Man, we had a grrreat time! Hoping they'll come back. They were away when we traveled to England which was disappointing so we've got to go back one day and see them.

There are a handful of others who became very dear friends as well. None I've seen for years but we all keep in touch every so often too. Keeping in touch is important. Friendships shouldn't die because you live in different countries.

I still see my old housemates and buddies from the states. I've been back there twice, and they came over to London once. Really cool :-)

Darren: You lived with them and you are still friends? That's awesome when that happens. How long did you live together and where?

Yup, still friends. I actually speak more to the guys who I went to College with, and people I met whilst traveling to another College in the states were I had friends from the UK studying. A great bunch of characters, they made my time in the USA fantastic, a real joy with many, many fond memories. Without them I wouldn't have had a good time at all, so I owe them all many, many beers.

I lived with the guys in Charleston, SC, for six months back in 2003. I've been back to Charleston twice, and they came over (separately!) to London. One of them even ended up at my UK University in my final year, as they did a year abroad study program. Much fun indeed! It's really nice to show them places no tourists go - the same they did for me.
