Can anyone recommend a good hostel in Amsterdam that's clean, comfortable and relatively central?

Not been there yet myself but hope to sometime soon. The Flying Pig is supposed to be pretty good. There's 2 flying pig hostels in the town. Rated as one of the best in the world according to hostelworld reviews.

I stayed at The Flying Pig Downtown when I was there last summer. It ended up being the best hostel we stayed in during our time in Europe. It's very central, close to the red light district, supermarkets, musuems, lots of coffee shops... etc. The rooms are very nice and they offer queen size beds if you're traveling with a partner, or just want more room. It feels very safe and secure. There's a fully equipped kitchen downstairs and the main room has a bar and lounge area. If you're planning on visiting Amsterdam and want to see all the major sights, I definitely recommend the Downtown location.

They also have a beach and uptown location.

I recommend booking in advance for every night you want to stay there. It's very popular, and booking on a day-by-day basis like we did means that you'll probably end up walking around Amsterdam looking for another hostel. We stayed in another hostel our second night in town and it wasn't nearly as nice.

Thanks for the great advice! Sounds perfect to me...

I'm a bit of a flashpacker nowadays, so I'm gonna go for a bed in one of the four-bed rooms. I think I'm just too old to share a dorm with up to 31 other people just to save a few Euros

If it was a weekend away I wouldn't want to stay in a big dorm either! If it was part of a big trip I wouldn't care less. Plus this hostel is supposed to be a massive party place

I stayed at all three Flying Pigs and I liked the uptown location the best as it wasn't soo big. I had an amazing time, was able to smoke and heard the best advice, go to Slovenia and Croatia!
