My family and I will be visiting Prague from the 31st. Oct. to the 3rd. Nov.

At one point we will be at the Petrin Hill. From there we want to visit the Castle. I cannot find any details about the walk from Petrin Hill to Strahov Monastery. Is it better to walk directly there or return down the hill and take the No. 22 tram?

I took the railway up to the top of Petrin Hill and then cut down and across to Prague Castle - there are clear walking tracks, there are great views across the city and it doesn't take very long.

Where will you be staying in Prague? If its out of the city centre a bit then you may want to get a 3 day tram pass - in which case then you may be better off with the tram if it's cold!

if you want to visit the monastery on your way from Petrin Tower to the castle, definitely walk. It's a matter of 15-20 minutes of slow walk though nice park with a great view of castle and Prague. And most of the way you'll be walking down the hill :-) You can find a small map attached...

Thank you very much for your help Mimiama. As a matter of fact there is.

We plan to purchase train tickets to Vienna at Wasteel's office in the main station. They quote us regular second class, with an optional surcharge for reserved seats. I would go for unreserved seats, but my companions are nervous that when we get to the train there will be no seats available and we will have to stand all the way to Vienna. Is this a possibility? We would be taking the 13:30 train and there are ten of us. In your opinion, is it worth the extra to get reserved seats?

Depends on which day you will travel. I would suggest you to buy the reservation when traveling on Friday, at weekend or before or during some holiday. Wien is quite close and people often do one day trips there for shopping etc., especially short before Christmas. I would not be afraid of traveling without reservation in the middle of week. Of course, then it might be a little bit complicated for you to sit close together since you will be a bigger group. But after all, the fee should be 5 dollars max I would say. So if the reservation will make your companions feeling more safe and comfortable, I think it is worth it :-)

Thanks for the advice. In fact we will be travelling Prague/Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest, and the seat reservation fee is US$ 8.40 each all the way through. I will accept your advice and purchase the reserved seats, just in case. We will be travelling Prague/Vienna on Monday 2nd. November on the 13:30 train.

Well, the fee is a little bit higher then, but also you take a longer and split up journey. Anyway, I think it wont be the highest entry in your travel budget. The most important is the feeling you will take home with you. And I know from my own experience it is not pleasant to stand for 5 hours in a full train :-)

Thanks. Keep in mind that the reservation fee is 8.40 for the whole route, and we will be stopping off in Vienna and Bratislava. In actual fact there will be three separate reservations. It comes out to 2.80 for each segment.
