After a year travelling in Australia, I've come up with a list of must-dos for any adventure traveller.

1. Scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef (it's a great place to get your certification!)
2. Learn to surf (Byron Bay is great!)
3.Snorkel with dolphins and sea lions in the wild in South Australia
4. Hike the 75 km long overland track in Tasmania
5. Canoe Catherine Gorge in NT

Happy Trails!

Top things to do in Oz:

I agree with a couple of your choices above: Heres mine....

1. learn to dive on the great barrier reef
2. visit the red centre of Oz (Uluru, Kata Tjuta and kings Canyon)
3. canoeing Katherine Gorge in the Northern Territory
4. Drive the Great ocean road in victoria
5. Get out from the main cities and get into the great Ozzy outback and sleep under the stars in swags.
6. oh..an extra one. Try a skydive!

Of course there is a million other fantastic things to do here as well!!!

Happy travelling !

I'll be in Oz from the middle of Jan 2004, hopefully to spend 5-6 months travelling.

So thanks for the great suggestions and good luck with your future travels!

Cheers, DEZ smile.gif

Byron Bay was great (sidetrip to Nimbin) as well The Great Ocean Road. Sydney is a wonderful city to explore and Perth is a great place to spend Australia Day. Have fun!

I'm not too sure about renting... there are defintely agencies around though. You can look around and I would also seriously consider buying. There is a huge market for buying/selling used vehicles in Oz. Darwin is a great place to look - there is a big backpackers vehicle market every weekend on the mainstreet.

Have fun! smile.gif

You missed the most important thing in Australia. My Mum's roast !!!

Also, being an Aussie who went to Byron Bay years and years ago before the backpacker scene hit it, I keep well away from it. There are far nicer beaches in the same area without the local ferals.

Australia is an amazing country, and what ever you are looking for you are sure to find something on that huge island to remember for the rest of your life.

From my own experiences I would have to recommend getting off the beaten track as much as possible. By far the most memorable adventures I had were away from the crowds and in the lesser frequented areas of the country.

It's easy to find these places; just go where there isn't as much printed in the guidebooks!

Hey,

I'm a local South Aussie who, I'm ashamed to say, had never been to Kangaroo Island until last year.

I've seen a fair bit of Australia and other parts of the world, but I should have gone to KI sooner! I loved it. I now recommend it to all of my international friends visiting.

If you're coming to Adelaide to go to the Barossa, up to Coober Pedy/Alice etc, make sure you allow a few days for Kangaroo Island.

If you get the chance go to Paul's Place at Stokes Bay, which is a wildlife park. This is a bit of a plug because Paul and Katja are my friend's relatives, but it's definitely worth a visit...

it's not for the faint-hearted though, so don't go if you're scared of Aussie critters.

The number one thing you must do in Oz (and I'm an Aussie) is see a game of Aussie Rules or (if it's summer) cricket one-dayer. Best to see it live, but on the tv if you must.
