Hello,

I am about to head off to S.E.Asia for 2 months and one of the places we are visiting is Angkor Wat. Just wanted to know if anyone could recommend any accomodation around the area.

Also would people recommend staying in Siem Reap and doing day tours to Angkor Wat or actually staying in Angkor Wat itself?

Siem Reap is only 8 or 9 km from Angkor Wat, think all the accommodation is there :-)

There is no accommodation at Angkor Wat itself. The whole area is temples with a few places to eat. Siem Reap is less than ten minutes away, and you have a huge choice of restaurants as well as the markets to browse.

When I stayed there five years ago there were plenty of places that offered decent rooms for $5 a night with ensuite bathroom and free breakfast. Of course there are more up market hotels closer to the temples, but you'll be away from all the action in Siem Reap which really is a great little town.

I'm living & working in Siem Reap at the moment - it's an awesome city. Try Golden Takeo Guesthouse, it's my buddy's place. He'll do you a good rate and someone can pick you up if you like. If not, there's a shed load of decent places. You can't actually stay inside the complex, theres just a couple of decent spa's on the main road. All the budget accommodation is in the city centre. There's rooms (sleeping areas) from $1 upwards.

Golden Takeo is in Wat Bo area, a cracking little haunt, 10mins walk from the old market area and pub street 6km from Angkor Wat.

I recently spent 2 months in Cambodia, the majority of which was in Siem Reap. I stayed at a wonderful family owned guesthouse (brand new) called New Riverside Hotel. $15 per night for air conditioned room, with new pool and restaurant. Transportation I used www.angkorwattuktuk.net

Angkor Wat is breathtaking, my driver Sopheap customised a trip for me so I got the most out of the temple visit.
