Hi folks, I am planning a trip to Barcelona this summer and was trying to decide wether to drive from barcelona to Bilbao and fly back or the other way around. I also was wondering if anyone had a great route to take. I am a foodie at heart so if that makes a difference.

Although we trip down to the area most years because we tug our caravan we travel through France as well making a nice 3 week vacation so I can't help you with that route except to say I wouldn't really like driving over the mountains with our tourer. Solo it would be an exciting but tiring drive over a couple of days.

Driving is Spain (and France) is far more relaxed than some places in Europe as long as you don't break the law
then they really do clobber you - eg a light out is €350 fine although you don't need to carry spare bulbs since September last year I wonder just how on most modern vehicles we are supposed to change the bulb anyway

I would recommend you to drive if you have a lot of baggage and if you want to travel and get form one place fast to another.
If you can find a cheap flight, and you don´t want to explore at lot by car, take a flight. It might be easier and cheaper, because you have to keep in mind, that you have to pay road charges in Spain. If you stay on roads and don´t follow small streets, driving should be okay.

IF you use the Autopista in Spain or the Autoroutes in France then obviously you pay for them BUT by doing so there is a lot less traffic (especially compared to the UK's Motorways) there are far more and far BETTER services in Spain and France and of course speeds are higher and driving is so much more relaxing.

I would much prefer to drive 1500 miles through France and Spain from Calais to Valencia than the 250 miles from Home to Dover.
