100 million votes were cast to find the new Seven Wonders of the World. So far we've visited two of them - Petra and the Taj Mahal. I'm sure many of you can beat that!

New Seven Wonders

I think all the choices were great.

Chichen Itza in Mexico is beautiful, but I thought Tikal in Guatemala was even greater!

I guess there is some politics involved in this!

QUOTE(hsvyas @ Nov 17 2009, 11:10 PM) *

last year i visited 'Taj Mahal' its really very beautiful....
And i would love to go :
The Greate Piramid of Giza
The Hanging gardens of Babilon
The Temple of Artemis

As I am sure you know, the Temple of Artemis was completed around 550 BC close to Ephesus, in western Turkey. Though the monument is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only foundations and sculptural fragments of the temple remain.

It was a 120-year project, initially designed and built by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes, at the expense of Croesus of Lydia.

The Temple was destroyed on July 21, 356 BC in an act of arson committed by Herostratus. According to the story, his motivation was fame at any cost.

Today the site of the temple, which lies just outside Selçuk, is marked by a single column constructed of dissociated fragments discovered on the site. However, the scene across the scant remains is one of the delights of this site. You can enjoy, beyond the lone column, views of the castle on Ayasoluk Hill; the Basilica of St. John (tomb of the Evangelist); İsa Bey Camii, a late 14th Century Mosque and the most significant Selçuk monument which gives the town its name; and the ancient Turkish Baths built in 1364.

A photographic opportunity to die for!

Too bad the banawe rice terraces didn't make it to the top 7, well taj mahal has a very interesting story when it was build

yES, heard that it was built for the deceased wife of the king (or whatever they call the ruler) as a memorial, but due to the intensity and complex details of building, the coffin was actually mistaken for unimportant stuff and was ordered to be thrown away. frantics.gif

Teaches us a lot, I'd say.

Cichen Itza is fantastic. I've always wanted to see Christ the Redeemer while strolling the beaches though.

I've only been to the Colosseum, but yeah, I would love to visit all of them.

Too bad Angkor Wat and Kiyomizu-dera were only finalists; I just visited those places recently. biggrin.gif

We have been very fortunate and have been to all 7 (on this site search "The New Seven Wonders of the World" heatheravan) we believe all seven sites are wonderful but very subjective. We have also been to 7 of the 13 finalists and plan to visit another 5 this year (search "Finalists New Seven Wonders of the World" heatheravan).
We are also going to be the devils advocate and disagree that only the Giza Pyramids exist from the original list, while not much is left The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is visitable and Ephesus itself is well worth a visit.

I have been to the Great Wall, the Colosseum, and the Taj Mahal. It is a pity that my favorite Angkor Wat is not included in the New Seven Wonders. unsure.gif

QUOTE(vacation365 @ Apr 2 2010, 10:14 PM) *

I haven't been to any of them yet. The closest one I got to was when I was in Nanjing in China which was where the Great Wall of China should be extended to or should have ended there, but they never made it to there.

I'd love to go to all of the 7 wonders smile.gif

Seems like a lot of people are talking about the Taj Mahal in India, I have seen some wonderful photos of it. When talking to a few friends from New Dehli, India, I told them I'd love to go visit and also see Taj Mahal when I am there. They told me, most people who live there think that it's just a piece of crap, and they don't really understand why a lot of people all over the world want to visit that temple. I was so SURPRISED when they mentioned that... kinda left me speechless.

Happy Easter everyone
