Hiii! I'm trying to find out how to take a water taxi from Chetumal, Mexico to San Pedro BZ. Does anyone have any info. on this? I read a blog from someone who did this but they never got back to me with the info. Times, cost??? I've taken the bus across the border a couple of times, but would rather take a water taxi! Sounds more fun! Also I really do not like having to make reservations anytime anywhere. But is this a really busy time January 1st - 14th? For Belize and Guatemala? Should I make some reservations? Thank You

Today there are basically two companies offering water taxi transport from Chetumal to San Pedro and vice versa. You can drop the price a bit if you bargain, their offices in Chetumal are next door to each other directly at the portīs entrance. One of them is more comfy, the other one will be a bit cheaper in the end. You decide. Keep one thing in mind: if possible try to sit as far in the back of the boat as possible. The trip will be quite rough especially in the front.
Reservations: you can do that online, but when we have been there there were only a handful of other travellers, so there is no need to. But I donīt know if that changes depending the season.
Find more infos on our blog, choose your language in the upper right.

We took the San Pedro Express from Chetumal to get to Caye Caulker via San Pedro (border control) having just turned up at the port on the day. Its easier to turn up at the port and will be cheaper than buying through agents elswhere (don't know about online though). Watch put for the exit charge at the Chetumal port's Mexican immigration control. We had to pay Ģ30 US dollars each in addition to a port tax charged by the boat company. I have since learnt that the 'exit tax' is possibly a scam (this can often happen in a number of border controls). The best way to test the integrity of this 'tax' is to ask the official for a receipt; in spanish Recibo. Otherwise, as with the previous blog the journey is pretty easy although comfort is weather dependent.
The cost of the boat journey for March 2012 was about $35 us dollars one way to Caye Caulker (45 min beyond San Pedro). Don't know cost of journey to only San Pedro. Feb & March is mid season for the Cayes in Belize with post xmas/early January high season (so I was told).
