A GUIDE OF THE NAMIBIAN CITY OF WINDHOEK.
The Namibian city of Windhoek carried the architectural, linguistic and culinary stamp of Namibia’s German colonial past.
WHY WINDHOEK? It sits in the rugged Khomas Hochland, the spine of mountains running down central Namibia. Windhoek, its red roofs spread among olive-green acacia scrub, carries the architectural, linguistic and culinary stamp of Namibia's German colonial past, but the busy streets tell the story of the city's 20 peaceful and prosperous years of independence.
ATTRATIONS To Avis Dam for a walk in the veld.
WHAT TO AVOID. The midday sun. Behave like the locals and have a long siesta.
TAXI OR PUBLIC TRANSPORT? Taxi, although if you have a hired car, driving yourself is a piece of cake. HANDBAG OR MONEY BELT? A handbag, but hold it tight when in town and leave your passport and most of your money in your hotel safe.
WHAT TO BUY? A bottle or two of nara oil, a delicious, nutty oil made from the seeds of the nara fruit, a nutritious desert plant. It is fantastic for cooking or splashed on a salad or roast vegetables.
