Hey there, I am currently in Beijing and looking to go trekking in Tibet, a week or 2. Open as to the exact intinerary. I am travelling alone and apparently all tour groups need to be of the same nationality - so if there are any Brits out there in China / Nepal or around and fancy a trek in Tibet (pretty soon) please drop me a line.

I don't know if the situation has changed but when I did it 3 years ago there was no problem with nationalities. Our group was 2 Brits and 2 Danish. No problems at all. All the other groups were even more mixed than that.

I think the best thing you can do is get to Lhasa and try to find a group there. All the hostels seemed to have noticeboards with people looking to fill up the Landcruisers.

My friend who is a travel agent in Yunnan told me that last year the government implemented new travel rules for Tibet. The most restrictive being that for a group to get a permit they had to be minimally a group of 5, all of the same nationality. So, no small groups nor a group of 6, for example, in which one or more travelers are of different nationalities. Must be guided groups, as well. Hope that helps.

It seems that you have to apply for Tibet travel permit first through a tour agency based in Tibet first then you are allowed to enter Tibet. So I think you should learn something about Tibet travel permit first.
