Parliament on Wednesday unanimously passed a motion to designate Burma's democracy advocate, Aung San Suu Kyi, an honorary Canadian citizen.

Suu Kyi joins the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela, who have both been awarded honorary Canadian citizenship. I'm sure Canadians couldn't feel more honored to have her join the revered list.



Her current status as a political prisoner remains and her confinement has been extended by the Burmese government. Again.

Hmmm, just checked for an update on her situation in Wikipedia. So is she in jail right now?:

On October 25, 2008, Nyan Win of the National League for Democracy (NLD), stated: "6 party members were sentenced to two to 13 years imprisonment each.... They were charged with inciting people to harm the peace of the State...Suu Kyi completed 13 years of house arrest on October 25, 2008. UN leaders, led by the European Union's Special Envoy for Myanmar, Italian Piero Fassino, the U.S. State Department and from other nations called for Suu Kyi's release and of the nearly 2,000 other political prisoners in Myanmar.[40][41]
