I've been couchsurfing for about a year now, and can say I've only had one bad experience.

A strange young man from Senegal, who would not get out of my own personal bed. I told him to sleep on the couch, but he wouldn't. So I stayed up late, until the first bus came to my house, and made him get on it and go!

Ack!

However, this guy had no references. I advise people not to let people like this into their homes.

Anybody have a similar experience? Or better experiences?

I have met a TON of awesome people here, in Ottawa, in Montreal, Quebec City and Boston at various meetups and they are all courteous, kind and very trustworthy people. Glass is half full kind of people. It's soooooo great.

I've had great experiences so far, excellent experiences, and have heard a few classics from fellow couchsurfers. Remember the money scamming guy who kept asking for a bung? One small amount to get someone out of the sticky stuff is fine but to constantly keep handing over notes to help someone who's 'desperate' is just stupid.

I guess the main risk is personal safety. Did you take this this guy in to your home with absolutely no feedback Louise?

The money scamming guy?

Yeah, I did, this guy had no references, but we had some good conversations on MSN beforehand. He wasn't evil or out of control, just expected something else.

I had a guy on my couch just cause he asked. Never met him before. Turned out to be a cool dude. Bumped into him at other festivals since.

Dude! I was so supposed to be enjoying a month out that way now. But putting the truck in the ditch kinda reworked my winter plans.

Working at a Refinery right now. Just pulling cable. Not too much thinking. Just just got my ticket, so still a lot to learn. Looking forward to the opportunities!

Looks interesting. Never would have thought to look for such a thing. Might be a good middle ground between camping and hotels. I do love meeting people, so who knows...
I will investigate further.
