Just starting to plan 10 week trip to South America January-March. Only fixed points are arrival and departure Sao Paolo (using airmiles for business class flights and that was the only availability on British Airways). From there we plan on Iguaza, Posadas for side trip to Trinidad, Paraguay, BA, return trip to Cordoba.
From there hoped to get to Viedma to take train across patagonia, then to Puerto Montt to catch ferry through Chilean Fjords thence to Ushuaia to see if we can pick up a trip to Antarctica. Then north Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and flight back across to Rio.
Issue is - trains run infrequently (Cordoba only twice a week, patagonia once a week leaving on a Friday, same day the ferry leaves Puerto Montt - so you miss it and hang around in Chiloe for 5 days. (Not ruling out that option) But I also know patagonia train currently not up to par.
Also read some rather grisly descriptions of long-distance bus travel (20 hours on a bus does not inspire me at the best of times), and internal flights are expensive.
So the question - finally - what is the best option/compromise for these travels. I'm beginning to think we just have to swallow the cost and use the flights because then we can reduce 'wasted' time and ensure being in the right place at the right time for the next part of our trip.
But what would we miss doing it that way?
