What are your funniest or weirdest dorm stories? blink.gif frantics.gif
Enjoyed the plastic bag symphony in early morning? Encountered people doing it in the bunk bed below you? Heard people screaming in the night while having a nightmare?

The classic orchestral bag rustling phenomena designed to slowly drive you to a heightened frenzy.

How bout people 'at it' in the bunk above (or below)?

Yeah! The plastic bag symphony is a weird phenomenon that I could never understand. Somehow, it seems like lots of people put most of the content of their backpack in plastic bags and usually very early in the morning, they decide it is time to pack! frantics.gif

Not in bunks but in the room and the courtyard outside pressed up against the glass window of the door... nice!

Also, I had one (drunken) guy try and climb into my bed thinking it was his when I was asleep. I suspect he got a slap!

I had a girl climb into my bed in Auckland for the full works, but sadly, I had to decline.

No. Actually a mate of mine was once subjected to suffering two 'guys' going hell for leather on the bunk above him. hyper.gif Don't think he's ever quite got over that one..

I woke up one day, because I could feel someone staring at me. Sure enough, there was a girl stood at the bottom of my bed staring intently while saying "ahhhh, sono" (which is the Portuguese for 'sleepy') She was a bit weird (we think she was a Brazilian prostitute) and the manager tried to evict her, by putting a note on her bed to say that she had to check out the next day as the place was full and she wasn't booked in. After coming in at 5am, she saw the note, snatched it off her bed and slammed it on mine while I lay there shaking. She went to the loo, and on coming back out, snatched the paper off my bed again and proceded to rip it to shreds with a blade over by the bin. I thought she was going to stab me!

Ah the joys of psycho dorm mates smile.gif everyone must have had a few loonies. There was one English guy in my dorm in Aus who was a complete muppet. Wasn't too chuffed about me dancing with his hot Italian missus in a club either......

That's dorm life for you. If you want to see some eye-openers, stay in a few dorms. You'll see some real shockers..

I've stayed in a number of youth hostels in the UK, but they must be different to the dorms you get elsewhere cause I never saw any of the behaviour I've read about across this site - although it was quite a few years ago now.

To be honest, I've read enough on various threads to think that dorm life would not suit me at all - I need peace and tranquility - John is happy with the fact that I like silence at times and so neither of us are uncomfortable to just read silently all evening. I couldn't bear all the banging (no pun intended!) and crashing and inconsiderate behaviour I've read about.

Everyone is different of course and I realise its an extremely budget friendly option.

I'm very much the same. It's definitely a perception and frame of mind thing. These days I mix it up a lot more than I used to, though I still think putting yourself in as many situations as possible opens up more possibilities..

Very true!! I sometimes am quite happy as well when I end up alone in a dorm. But regardless of all this craziness, I love the fact it is so easy to meet up people while in a dorm. This is the main reason why I do it. It somehow put you in more direct contact with the reality outthere.

I really quite enjoy dorm living, but then I am blessed with the ability to sleep like a log biggrin.gif

The most annoying thing recently was a roommate having their alarm go off...I could hear rustling that suggested they'd picked up their phone, but they let it go on for another few minutes even so. Even more annoying that it was some crappy electro music alarm. I really need to speak up more often ranting2.gif

I heard a sweet story from friends of mine who had a guy in their dorm come up and offer them a pack of earplugs each. He told them he was a really loud snorer, and so traveled around with a collection of disposible earplugs to try and compensate the people he stayed with!

I must admit to being a purpetrator of the plastic bag symphony at times when I've been poorly planned though - although I am aware it really sucks and try to keep it to bare minimum if I do find myself in such a situation...

It kills me. I've never got my head round it. Take the bag outside the room and make all the noise you want. Never understood the mentally of behaving with a complete lack of consideration for others.

Do like the earplug story though..

I reckon I`d make as much noise hauling my bag out of the room and re-entering several times to bring all my seperate bits and pieces outside to it though - my theory is better to try and pack as much as possible the previous night then finish the job with the few items you really do need to use just before you leave - should only be about 2mins of rustling tops. It`s a dorm - you`ve gotta deal with the noise of other people by default, it`s their consideration in trying to reduce that noise which is the point in my book.
