And, I can't believe people are allowed to walk all over it - how many other World Heritage sites does that happen at?

They're pretty and impressive if you can get away from the massive crowds though. I really like the city itself, there's a fairly well established tourist area and once you get away from it into the downtown area it's much nicer. The surrounding countryside is really beautiful too, lush, forested mountains interspersed with ponds, rivers, rice paddies and small farms. Edited to add what I think is a better picture of the tumuli (earth mound tombs) in Gyeongju (by the way I just realized that travelpod spells it "Kyongju" which is an older transliteration, Lonely Planet and most local sources use Gyeongju) and an image of the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, which I went to yesterday. When I applied to teach in Korea the first job I was offered was in Suwon but it took me too long to get my visa paperwork through so I had to pass on it and go with the job in Daejeon that I'm currently working. I really wish I had been able to take the job in Suwon, I like that city so much more.

I'm heading to Spain on the third, along with Portugal and Morocco, then back to the US temporarily while I apply for jobs teaching in the Persian Gulf, Asia and Latin America, I'm hoping for the Persian Gulf but I'll take whatever comes along.
