Inverness is a great base for a Highland holiday. From the Capital of the Highlands, it is possible to make wonderful outings into the surrounding area. The Black Isle (actually a 'peninsula') is within easy reach, so is the Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle, Inverewe Gardens, Loch Ness and countless other attractions. It is imporant not to ignore Inverness either - the castle, the Flora McDonald statue, the river, the town house, countless lovely churches and St Andrews Cathedral. Thanks for that :-D Inverness is great - I was there twice last year. Once as a base for exploring the north, right up to the north coast past John O'Groats, which was just beautiful (made better by striking it lucky with good weather ;-) ) there is a great train carriage hostel just north of Inverness too, for a quirky place to stay: Train carriage hostel

Then I was there again at the Loch Ness Marathon in September. Loch Ness marathon. This was a great event and atmosphere, but accommodation books out quickly!
