Do you anything about these? I could do with you here. In my garage is a 1966 Beetle which was going to be my retirement project but travelling is more interesting so its going to have to wait. Nas

Nas I am expert on aircooled rear engine VW's: type 1 (Beetle, Käffer...) type 2 (Combi, Van, Microbus...) type 3 (suitcase engine, short block) type 4 (UGLY!!! but with EXCELENT 1.7 suitcase long block engine, great automatic 3 speed trany with long diferential) type 181 (Safari/Thing) Brasilia (a Brasil VW design, using the Karman Guia chasis), Hormiga (a small one ton truck, built in México with UG! front wheel drive & 1.6 aircooled engine under the seat: was a BIG FLOP!) & the Porsche 914/4 On motorcicles, I have only assisted "Motards" with trouble: like that guy from CentralAmerica, on a Beemer with oposed pistons. He had the protection bars, but on a soft ground stop, the BMW tipped over...and broke the aluminum brake handle. (bars protect cilinder heads!!!)Here in Mexico, FORGET ABOUT PARTS in a hurry: if you have time (errors on shipments are VERY common...) you eventually get the part before next millenium! My friend Cleofas, in Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca state coast) welds aluminum engine pans, for the BIG Komatsus that open new roads. He welded the handle leaving only a perfect weld cordon, increasing the BMW traveler caracter! He said on delivery: "It will break again, but on another spot"So consult with other Motards on Mexican travel & parts to have with you, before you decide witch Motorcycle (the bike MANUAL!!!). Personally, I would go on the 1966 type 1 beetle!!! Plenty of parts for that one...used & new. But I have the tools & will + restless fingers on my hands...& have assisted aviators too: Cessnas, Pipers, Maules...on emergencies in the Mexican back-country (since George got the presidency, I don't use the term "bush mechanic" any more...)¿Have you readed "the Art of Zen, and motorcycle maintenance? One of my favorite travel books...don't remember who wrote it!

...see you later, alligator !

My name is Andrew and i'm 23. I'm from England, but i've currently been living and working in Singapore since Sept '07 on a post uni work placement of sorts (finishing end of july) as a engineer in the shipyards. I originally was just looking for somewhere to write a blog for the family back home to read whilst i was over here, but found this and the abundance of information on offer and set up an account straight away. Will creating some blogs of previous trips, as i find the free time...although most will have to be done on my return home. Some of my favourite things: Music, Film, Reading, Playing the piano, Travel, Occasional bouts of skydiving Places I have been: Most of Western Europe (say close to 90% of it), Bolivia, Nigeria (lived here for 6 years ), Singapore, South Korea Places I am going: Sydney for a week (July '08), Overlanding from Vic Falls to Cape Town (Nov '08). Then the biggest trip that i've ever taken, 43 weeks overlanding!!! from Malaga, Spain to Istanbul, Turkey...via Cape Town and Nairobi (March '09 to Jan '10) Favourite Music: I have quite a varied taste, although you'll find me listening to rap/hiphop and rock/metal the most. Favourite Movies: The Shawshank Redemption, Platoon, City of God, Into The Wild, Taxi (French original), Rocky & Rambo films Favourite Books: Too many to mention. Types of People I enjoy: I basically get on with most people, but i tend not to get on with the ones who are overly stereotypical of people and places (i think thats the right way of putting this) and racist etc. Places I Would Like To Visit: New Zealand, Rest of Asia, North America (closest i've come is the max allowed distance outside of the doors whilst on transit in Miami airport), South America, Rest of Europe....Basically, i would like to travel everywhere if possible it's just money and time are key factors/problems. Favourite Quotes: "Knowledge is Power, Guard It Well" "If at first you don't succeed....SKYDIVING isn't for you."
