A very recent study in Erzurum has shown that almost all participants were not opposed to individuals from different national, religious, ethnic or sectarian groups visiting their city or country as tourists. In fact, earlier this year, The 25th Winter World University Games, took place there. 1,880 athletes took part from 58 counties.
Being in the eastern part of Turkey where foreigners are seen much less frequently than in the major coastal tourist areas, all visitors (as in any country) should respect local customs and behave and dress responsibly. However, Turkish people have a very high level of tolerance and understanding and visitors not conforming to some of the, maybe, lesser know local customs will not bring any criticism.
Erzurum is the highest city in Turkey, at an altitude of 1,850 m (6,070 ft). Located in the Eastern Anatolia Region, it is a city on the traditional Silk Road and has been governed by many cultures over the centuries.
