I am sure if you get it done by a monk at a temple it is going to be something spiritual for certain! If I was going to get one done there, that would be my choice! Go for it, imagine how awesome that would be and that it would have some real meaning behind it!

Because monks aren't allowed to touch women, and vice versa, it will be interesting to see if you can find a "monk" who will tattoo you. I would imagine Bradjolina had a lay person apply her tattoo.
As far as "why" monks do it, Thai Buddhism, although called "Theravada", is much broader than that. It is packed with all kinds of magic.
One of the problems with getting tattoos done in symbols, or in a language we don't understand, is that there are those who will pull one over on you. There was a Japanese artist who was tattooing young female tourists with a character that meant "loose women", but in more crude terms.
;-)

Oh, I thought they just couldn't touch below your waist...hmm... Also, I am hesitant about the monk thing because i'm not Buddhist or even spiritual or anything, so it wouldn't even really mean very much to me... Yes, tattoos in other countries are scary because of the language barrier, that was another reason this tattoo thing was a "fleeting" thought...

Hmm yep! That was pretty much the stupidest thing I did too, went riding (as a passenger) on a Harley Davidson in the middle of the night when I was S*$#faced in Bahrain! The guy driving wasn't drunk luckily enough! But I was hanging on for dear life and I did end up burning the inside of my leg FOUR TIMES on the exhaust and have the scars still now, and at the time I didn't feel a thing...!!!!! Apart from that I have a nice little star tattoo on my right foot, and its what we call a Mariner Star! It was done for me in Bahrain by a guy in the US Navy, who was a qualified tattooist! He also did the one on my upper back! I do have one from Japan (as you all know) and two from London!
