We are planning to travel through Italy and France by bus and train next year. The idea is that we stay in a town (e.g. Nice) for a number of days and do day trips to interesting places nearby accessible by public transport (e.g. Monaco). So far I have selected Nice and Arles, but after that I am not too sure. I would like to visit Carcassonne before heading towards St. Malo and eventually Paris. We have driven around France on two previous visits and would like to see areas and places we haven't seen before. Previously we stayed a week in the Dordogne and a few days in the Loire Valley as well as Lyon. Can anyone recommend good towns to use as bases for day trips by public transport between Carcassonne and St. Malo?
