Belgium City Goes Veg One Day a Week

Now this is one way to make an incredible eco-impact;

Starting this week there will be a regular weekly meatless day, in which civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals.

Ghent means to recognise the impact of livestock on the environment.

The UN says livestock is responsible for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, hence Ghent's declaration of a weekly "veggie day".

Public officials and politicians will be the first to give up meat for a day.

Not only does it lessen greenhouse gases ,it also take a whole heck of a lot of water to put meat on your table.

Will other cities and countries follow suit? It's not much of a 'sacrifice' for the greater good....

How do they enforce this? Will people actually participate?

Will schoolchildren not be allowed to bring meat to school? Or will they just not be able to buy it?

Interesting idea and great promotion, but I don't believe that it's really anything more than lip service.
